How X crops your profile picture
X takes a square and displays it as a circle. The recommended upload is 400×400 px, and the file must be under 2 MB.
Because your avatar appears small in the timeline and replies, a centred, high-contrast subject performs best.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Files over 2 MB. X will reject them; resize first.
- Corner-placed subjects. The circular mask clips them.
- Tiny detail or fine text. It’s lost at timeline size.
- Low-resolution images. They look soft once X compresses them.
How to change your X profile picture
On desktop: go to your profile, click Edit profile, click the camera on your current photo, upload and adjust, then save.

How your avatar sits against the header
On X your profile picture overlaps the bottom-left of your header banner, and the two are read together at a glance. If your avatar and banner clash in colour or the banner is busy right behind the circle, the whole header looks cluttered. Choosing a header that stays calm behind your avatar makes both elements look considered.
The avatar also carries across the timeline on its own, detached from the banner, so it has to work in isolation too. A centred, high-contrast subject is the safe choice: it holds up small in replies and quote posts while still looking deliberate next to your header on the profile page.
Trust, impersonation and recognisability
X moves fast and is full of accounts, so a clear real photo or a consistent, distinctive logo does a lot to signal that you are a genuine account worth following.
